Call me Shin

or Phan Anh

Call me Shin,

I am a creative marketer and designer currently based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I have had over 8 years of professional experience in marketing, branding and graphic design for several domestic and international brands.

I am often known as something of a Jack-of-all-trades, but would rather see myself in the lesser-quoted phrase that comes after it: Master of None. “Why should we be interested in someone who, in other words, isn’t specialised in anything”, you ask? Well, I can’t help it if you are indifferent to me, especially if you are looking for a specialist in his or her particular field. Nonetheless, since you are already here, I might as well attempt to roughly explain my philosophy. For me, proclaiming to master something implies knowledge and perfection, which are not only fatal barriers to progress, but, in most cases, preposterous. “One always has exaggerated ideas about what one doesn’t know”, says Camus. This is why I heartily profess to know nothing, to be of a perpetually curious and eclectic disposition, and to continually learn from as vast a range as I can.

As an avid reader, I enjoy perusing a wide range of fields for the better part of my free time: from business, marketing and advertising, literature, philosophy — Western and Eastern alike, to natural, social, behavioural and political sciences, among others.

Widening my range has provided me with not only an ever-growing repertoire of creative materials, but also a mindset of striving to see everything in multiple perspectives, to maintain the benefits of breadth, diverse experience (or, to borrow the words of  Wilhelm von Humboldt, “the absolute and essential importance of human development in its richest diversity”), lateral and interdisciplinary thinking. All of the these are, to conclude, the sine qua non of my navigation in life, career, and intellectual pursuit of creativity.

When you're self-taught you experiment more, trying to find the same sound in different places, you learn how to solve problems.

twcenter.net

My journey in acquiring the design know-hows begins as early as in 2010. My interest in gaming then got me into the tinkering and modification of games. Engaging in domestic and international forums — yes, forums, these were the ancient, long-forgotten days when they were the most common means of making friends and chatting with people all over the world — while simultanously teaching myself to craft 3D models like weapons, armours, characters and scenes, to 3D animate with 3Ds Max and to texture them with the help of Photoshop, I made a name for myself in said forums, earning a Modeler of the Year Award on twcenter.net in the process.

Foreign Trade University

I enrolled in Hanoi Foreign Trade University, and participated in multiple campus clubs and organizations. It was here that I learnt the basic of Marketing and Communications, ideas and concepts generation, event organizing among others that helped shaping my career.

AmericanSTEM Vietnam

I started working at AmericanSTEM Vietnam first as a Marketing Intern, then moved up as Marketing Executive, then finally, in 2019, as Art Director. In a start-up environment, and as someone who enjoys seeking new ways to solve new and existing problems, my skillset grew broadly as necessitated: digital painting, video editing, photography, front-end development, performance marketing, interior design, motion graphic... — to name a few. Once becoming entrusted and promoted as the brand's Art Director, I was in charge of refreshening its guidelines, assets, developing the new website and overseeing all visual aspects of it henceforth.

I'm forever indebted for my time at AmericanSTEM, where STEM Education philosophy had confirmed and solidified my inter-disciplinary approach in problem-solving.

MODMO e-Mobility

After leaving AmericanSTEM, I relocated to Ho Chi Minh City, and joined Modmo e-mobility, first as Graphic Designer & Website Development Manager, before eventually becoming its Head of Design in 2021. Here I continued to simultaneously deepen and broaden my range, getting familiar with 3D design with Blender, UI&UX design among others.

Efficiency is doing things right,

Effectiveness is doing the right things.
